The diatribe below is inspired by a conversation with my friend Alex Tarbet about this wonderful article found here.

http://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/im-sick-of-pretending-i-dont-get-art

I think it sort of helps explain my approach to art in a lot of ways, even though indirectly.

“I’d agree with that. This is how it sort of breaks down for me. I hate the stuff that’s displayed in these above articles, because like the part of that quote “Fools because they HAVE to say something” aspect. They didn’t bother trying to learn how to do anything and just think their thing has worth because they did it. It reminds me of a gallery walk I did once where a fairly well intentioned fellow came in and was lookin at my art and saying all sorts of nice things, but I quickly realized that it was a front for “guess what I’m an artist to” so me of course in a bit of a salesman (gotta be nice) sort of way was like. “well you should bring some art in and set up your own booth” he then proceeds to go up to the manager of the establishment and a few hours later is back with these shitty collages of Marilyn Manson photos he had cut out of magazines and haphazardly pasted to a white piece of paper. He set his booth up next to mine and proceeded to alienate people from the corner we were in, he looked depressed that no one liked his art, and I felt sort of bad cause he didn’t really get that his stuff was simply shit. Now the other part is those that “I just painted a perfect replication of the mountains and a wheel cart”, that stuff sells like hot cakes and does take a lot of skill to be able to do. yet I am bored endlessly by that type of art work, like you said, “it’s not sayin anything”. I respect the skill, but couldn’t careless about it. Then obviously different things but sort of in the same area in my brain is photographers and “weird for the sake of weird”. I love photography simply because it’s sort of what someone saw and thought, “at this angle, with this lighting, and perspective I just uncovered some beauty in the world” so they are accomplishing what the *realistic painter* accomplished without anywhere near as much pomp. And the “weird for the sake of weird guys sometimes aren’t saying anything but when they’re combining 50 eyes with a camel on a blue desert landscape… that might not be sayin anything, but I’ll never see that in real life so it’s similar in the sense that it’s uncovering beauty in the mind as opposed to the physical world directly. And of course the work I love is the work that is metaphorical, deep, political, social…. so on and so forth. They don’t have to beat me over the head with it, and they don’t even have to be saying anything large or revolutionary. They can just remind me about concepts that I had pushed to the wayside while I go through life sleepy and trying to survive.”

This is one of the redone versions of my stolen paintings from 2007. Here is the older version.

The concept of the painting was to tribute “The Scream” with “American Gothic” and just push it into an absurd realm. The first time I did this it was on scratch board and I did it in high school in 2004. And now here is the 3rd version. Enjoy

Let today be a celebration of romance & desire. Love is in question, I think we all know this. Love is flawed. Where as romance & desire are pure even in their chaos. Let us celebrate human frailty, and our ability to feel empathy for a soul we only get a glimpse of through our peripheral lenses. This year has been nothing but a challenge to my notions of sacrificing a part of myself for a strange other, yet I’ve never felt more resolute in my commitment to the romance of the universe, and the desire for my better half. Goodnight ya’ll. I love you.
